washington, d.c. the suspected gunman allegedly carrying items from chick-fil-a. was the shooting fueled by the escalating chick-fil-a controversy? we have answers this morning. also, the latest outbreak of west nile virus. it's been detected in almost every state now. our dr. richard besser is here to tell us what the signs you should look for. and america's newest multimillionaire, somewhere in michigan this morning. with those winning numbers. 6, 27, 46, 51, 56, and powerball 21. i was so close. i wasn't at all, actually. why has there been so many big jackpots lately? we'll explain all that ahead. we're going to begin with that breaking news, the bomb threat on a plane flying from new york to moscow. 253 passengers onboard, forced to make an emergency landing in iceland overnight. abc's nick schifrin is in london, now, with the very latest.

good morning to you, nick. >> reporter: good morning, josh. the bomb threat was made to a law enforcement agency in new york just a few hours ago. that there were five suitcases on the airbus 330. so, the pilot made an emergency landing in iceland. it must have been a terrifying moment for the passengers. they looked out their windows and saw special forces soldiers running towards the plane. all the passengers had to evacuate. leave their bags onboard. authorities went through the luggage, piece-by-piece. right now, they've found no evidence of any bomb. so, aeroflot is going to play the same plane. it's not going to be a comfortable flight, after watching special forces comb through their luggage. now, to the $337 million powerball lottery. one of the largest prizes ever. the golden ticket was sold to a lucky winner at a gas station in lapeer, michigan.

that's where we find john schriffen this morning. good morning, john. >> reporter: amy, good morning. one person in michigan is waking up a very happy person. that's because the winning jackpot lottery ticket was sold here at this sonoco gas station behind me in lapeer, michigan. it's about 15 minutes away from flint. i talked to the store clerk. they don't know the identity of the person who won. they won't know until that person comes forward with that winning ticket. if you at home are wondering if you got a piece of the $337 million jackpot, well, get your tickets out. get a pen and pad. i'm about to read off the numbers for you. here we go. 6, 27, 46, 51, 56, and the winning powerball number, 21. the odds of winning that jackpot, 1 in 175 million. it was the seventh-largest jackpot in history. third-largest powerball. and officials are confirming to us that eight people have matched five numbers around the

country. they are also millionaires this morning, amy. >> john, we teased the question earlier. why so many big jackpots recently? there is an answer. >> reporter: well, that's right. amy, earlier, athe beginning of this year, powerball decided to raise the price of a ticket from $1 to $2. that means we're likely to see the big jackpots a lot more frequently. >> good news to everyone who plays. john schriffen, thanks so much. now, to details of the shooting in the lobby of a powerful conservative group in washington, d.c. abc news has confirmed the alleged gunman, floyd corkins, was a volunteer at a local lgbt center. police looking at whether the targeted group's opposition to same-sex marriage played a role and the recent controversy over chick-fil-a could have set him off. pierre thomas joins us from washington with the latest. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: good morning, josh. today, the fbi is breathing a sigh of relief after a potential

mass shooting was stopped, thanks to a heroic security guard. overnight, the police and the fbi swarmed the suburban virginia home of floyd corkins. authorities suspect corkins, 28, seen here moments after he was arrested, was about to unleash a deadly barrage of gunfire. his target, the head of the nation's best-known conservative group on social issues, the family research council. 10:45 wednesday morning. the suspect walked into the lobby and was confronted by a security guard. sources tell abc news, the man pulled out a 9 millimeter handgun, and fired a shot. the security guard seen here taken to the hospital, was somehow able to subdue the suspect. >> the security guard's a hero. >> reporter: there's mounting evidence that corkins was angry at the policies of the family

research council, which has positions on abortion and gay rights. corkins had worked as a volunteer for gay and transgendered people. he had chick-fil-a in his bag. but it's not clear if wednesday's incident had any ties to the controversy on gay marriage. the company's owner recently set off a political firestorm, suggesting he opposed gay marriage. the family research council supported that stand. the incident drew attention from the nation's highest levels, with president obama and candidate mitt romney, denouncing. this morning, that hero security guard is in stable condition, apparently doing well, josh. >> that's good news. pierre thomas, in washington. now, we turn to dan harris, to look at the other top stories developing. >> good morning, everybody. we're going to start with breaking news. the wildfires in the west, now on track to be the worst in a

decade. 63 major fires burning in a dozen states this morning. hundreds of people evacuated as firefighters scramble to get things under control there. so far this season, 10,000-square miles have burned. in colorado, they're dealing with an anthrax outbreak among cattle that's killing more cows. over 60 cows on 3 ranches have died. probably because they graze in place where's the soil is contaminated. none of the cattle entered the food supply. but people who work on the ranches are being treated with anti-bu anti-bi ybioti antibiotic, just as a precaution. britain's prince philip is in the hospital for a few days. he's being treated for a recuring bladder infection. the same problem landed him in the hospital back in june. johnson & johnson now promising to remove all potentially harmful chemicals from its products by 2015.

yesterday, that president obama is diminishing the office. this comes one day after the president took a personal job at the gop candide. it's "your voice, your vote." and david muir is on the trail and joins us from new port, kentucky. david? >> reporter: hey, amy. the romney campaign going on the offensive on two months. on medicare, they say this is a debate they welcome. but something equally as potent, the president's likability. this morning, president obama is defending vice president joe biden, after biden ignited that fiery war of words, while criticizing mitt romney. the president speaking out overnight, in an interview with "entertainment tonight." >> what joe biden was talking about, is again, an example of a substantive argument, a substantive issue that the american people should be concerned about. and his phrasing is a distraction from what it is saying. >> reporter: but that phrasing got him into trouble, when he took on romney, who has criticized those new rules, meant to watch over the big banks. >> unchain wall street.

they're going to put y'all back in chains. >> we don't spend a lot of time worrying about the chatter. the country's not as divided or obsessed with gaffes or some stray remark as washington is. >> reporter: but the romney campaign had already pounced, calling it a sign of a desperate presidency. >> the president's campaign is all about division and attack and hatred. >> reporter: overnight in ohio, romney's running mate, paul ryan, continued to punch. >> the president used to say, we're not blue states or red states. we're the united states of america. this is the most partisan time we've had in memory. >> reporter: a concerted effort by the romney campaign to go after his strongest asset in the polls, his likability. not if michelle obama would have her way. her first time on the campaign season. joking about her trip to the

state fair. >> pork chop and beer. >> he's so pleased with himself. >> reporter: and overnight, ann romney, defending her husband, on his decision to release only two years of his tax returns. >> it will just give them more ammunition. there's nothing we're hiding. we've had a blind trust for how many years. we don't even know what's in there. >> reporter: ann romney, sticking to the argument we've heard from the governor himself, before. anything more than two years simply gives their opponents, as ann romney just put it, more ammunition. amy, back to you. >> more to come. david muir, thanks so much. now, to a major red flag from the centers for disease control. a widespread nationwide outbreak of west nile virus. almost 700 cases detected across the country thus far, including at least 26 deaths. abc's dr. richard besser has spent years working on deadly diseases with the cdc. and joins us now to discuss what we're talking about. why so many cases this year? >> it is widespread.

this is the worst year ever for west nile virus. they have 700 confirmed cases. from that, you can estimate as many as 12,000 people have already been sickened by west nile virus. it's in 43 states. half of the cases are in texas. and the reason they think it's so bad this year, remember last winter there was very little snow. it wasn't very cold. you count on that cold to kill mosquitos. that didn't happen. mosquitos this year are really abundant. >> you're talking about 12,000 people exposed at some point. what kind of people are hardest hit here? >> it's a little unusual. the people who tend to get this worse are people 50 and older, healthy, active, spending a lot of time outside. the young seem to handle this very well. 80% of people who get infected with the virus, absolutely no symptoms. they' their body gets rid of it. 20% will have flu-like symptoms. what you worry about is the 1 in

150, with neurologic symptoms. they have brain swelling. >> quickly, in terms of precautionary measures people can take, what can you do? >> you have to prevent it. don't want to go out dawn and dusk when mosquitos are active. use repellent. cover up during those periods and get rid of standing water that would attract mosquitos. that will all help. >> thanks for that. now, to the end of a nationwide manhunt for a suspected murderer. nate summerfield is accused of killing his girlfriend over the fourth of july weekend in north carolina. police say he confessed to a relative and then went on the run. linsey davis has more. >> reporter: this morning, nathan summerfield is behind bars in ohio, as prosecutors plan to extradite him to north carolina to face murder charges. >> the deputy marshals and police officers have tracked him all over this country. >> reporter: the months-long nationwide manhunt ended at this

hotel in medina, ohio, wednesday. the 27-year-old had been on the run after allegedly killing his ex-girlfriend over the fourth of july weekend. they were on vacation together with their son, as well as her daughter from a previous relationship. police immediately focused on summerfield after his brother called 911 july 8th. >> my brother was in north carolina with his ex-girlfriend. and he came back and said he strangled her. and he dropped his kid off and left. >> reporter: police found her strangled and stabbed to death six days later. >> it's his turn to pay for what he has done. >> reporter: police say summerfield checked into this hotel room tuesday, as jay summerfield, changing only his first name. >> all of the s.w.a.t. teams came. they ran in room 211, for the guy. >> reporter: officials say he was unarmed and didn't put up a fight. u.s. marshals now want to know

kristen stewart's critics in a big show of support. why she's asking for people to stop attacking stewart right now. and get ready for a rush. ginger zee in for sam champion, who is away. but look at what ginger was doing before she came here. >> this morning? really? >> the highest, longest zip line in all of north america. riding through the skies for over four miles. i guess we've stolen your thunder because you made it. >> i'm here. >> a lot of fun. let's get to the heartbreaking story out of hawaii. a 16-year-old girl killed in a jet ski accident, as her family looked on. the 20-year-old man who crashed his jet ski is already facing negligent homicide charges. her family is filing a civil suit. >> reporter: terrible story. this was supposed to be a dream vacation for a bright, young woman. it ended in death, criminal charges, a lawsuit and two

families in anguish. going to hawaii was supposed to be a huge treat for 16-year-old kristen, a gift from her parents after she did well in school. >> she loved the islands. and she loved going out to the beach. >> reporter: the vacation ended disastrously. kristen was out jet skiing when she was hit by this australian tourist, a 20-year-old named tyson dagley. investigators say dagley was driving his jet ski recklessly, standing up, not looking where he was going, showing off for his girlfriend. >> he was speeding really fast. and came up and slammed into her. >> i saw her head lunge forward and hit the steering wheel. kristen then fell forward, fell back, and then fell into the water. >> reporter: kristen died the next day at a local hospital. dagley was charged with third-degree negligent homicide. in court, he sobbed. >> i pray every day, just to the

family. pray that everything is going to be okay. >> reporter: dagley's father says while he feels for kristen's family, his son was not at fault. this is a tragic accident. >> doesn't do anything. >> reporter: but kristen's stepfather is unswayed. not only is he pressing for dagley to be charged with a felony, right now he's facing misdemeanor charges, but he is suing dagley and the company that rented him that jet ski. >> we have a huge hole in our family. all taken away because of an individual who was negligent in the use of that wave runner. >> waiting for her to walk down the stairs. it's heartbreaking. >> reporter: tough to hear. we should say dagley has not yet entered a plea in this case. his girlfriend has also been charged. investigators say she videotaped the whole thing, and then

deleted it in an attempt to cover it all up. amy, back to you. >> thanks so much. let's bring in "gma" legal analyst, dan abrams. dan, we've seen other cases like this that didn't end up in criminal charges. usher's stepson. what makes this a crime? >> the authorities believe there is negligence involved here. and in the use of a vehicle, someone died. those are the three key things. someone died, vehicle, negligence. it's also just simple negligence. i use the word just, that this is a misdemeanor where he faces up to a year in jail. that's it. >> the judge is being very strict on bail, given how small or low the charge actually is. he wouldn't reduce it from $100,000. >> as a result, this guy can't get out right now. and some may say, $100,000 is nothing. he killed this girl. if you look at it through a

legal prism, he's charged with a misdemeanor. a third-degree crime. this is not a very serious crime as far as the law's concerned. and as a result, $100,000 is really high bail. >> and the family is filing several civil suits. one against dagley. but also the jet ski company. we reached out to the aloha jet ski company. how strong are those charges? >> they have a case against him. i don't know if he has a ton of money. but the interesting question will be against the company. they're saying, for example, they didn't warn -- he couldn't be driving the jet ski driving quickly. how do you tell someone they can't stand up on a jet ski? it will be a tougher case. >> thanks so much. now, to a shocking trial in texas. a high school teacher accused of getting too close to members of the school's football team. and prosecutors say they've got cell phone video footage and

explicit text messages to prove it all. brian owens has it all. >> reporter: brittany is now on trial, accused of sleeping with five students, four of them football players. one says his relationship began with this innocent text message from the 27-year-old married mother of three. hey, it's coach colleps, do you know what time the baseball game starts? but soon, that student, said he was exchanging up to 100 texts a day with her. >> she said that she craved that i had something she wanted. >> it progressed into explicit sexual messages. and then, an agreement to meet for sex. >> reporter: the prosecution's evidence against colleps, who taught at this school in ft. worth, texas, includes cell phone videos that allegedly shows group sex between the teacher and four of her students. that graphic video was played for the jury this week. police say it happened inside her home, when her children and husband were away.

he's an army specialist stationed out of state. at least before the trial, he stood by his wife. >> if you knew brittni, you would know he is a loving person. >> reporter: here's the legal twist. all of the students were 18, legal adults. so, the teacher is not facing statutory rape charges. but five counts of a relatively new charge. having an improper relationship with a student. one of the young men she aledgedly slept with, has publicly said she didn't commit a crime. and her attorney agrees. >> she is terrified. she has no idea whether she's going to be in prison next week or at home. >> reporter: if convicted, prosecutors believe she should spend the next 20 years in prison. for "good morning america," ryan owens, abc news, dallas. >> thank you for that, ryan. time, now, for another look at the weather. our resident zip liner, ginger zee, in for sam champion.

proceedings have now lasted three-times longer than the actual marriage. kardashian's attorneys say the legal people is dragging out the divorce. humphries' lawyers says the nba player was duped into marriage and wants an annulment, based on fraud. >> it's out of coincidence or by design, that the marriage lasted as long as the reality show. so, you know, he may have something. >> reporter: humphries lawyers are determined to prove this marriage was a fraud. both sides back in court in late november. but this divorce probably won't be finalized until 2013. >> hard to believe. paula, thank you. now, to a story that gives a whole, new meaning to sibling banding. identical twins who get plastic surgery at the same time. but they chose two very different types of face-lifts. abc's cecilia vega followed the

"expendables 2" opens tomorrow. jean-claude van damme, and chuck norris, other guys in this movie. you're the new kid. what's it like when you see all of those legends in one room? >> yeah. it's a little bit like a dream, looking at all those guys on set. i grew up watching all of them. yeah, to be on set and interacting with those kind of people is pretty incredible. >> liam, we're watching the movie. it is fair to say, it's a very physical movie, indeed. what did you do to be in proper shape for all of this? >> i lifted a lot of heavy stuff, was the key to that one. being on set with guys like that, who have been working out at their peak physical height
